Michael Martin, the speaker of the house of commons has resigned and he will be stepping down shortly.
This is excellent news, he is not only just as guilty as any of the other MPs with the gravy train expenses claims, but also has done immense damage to the office of speaker.
He was promoted way beyound his ability, he was at the centre of the attempts to hush up the expenses scandal and has always been a lousy partisan speaker.
My only hope is that he isn’t offered a peereage as is usual.
Some people might say that this is all snobbery just because Martin used to be a sheet metal worker. That’s rubbish, George Thomas and Betty Bothroyd also came up the hard way but they brought dignity to the office instead of demeaning it.
But what I find most amazing about this whole affair is that all the other MPs are suddenly using the useless Martin as a scapegoat merely to take some of the heat off themselves.
In other news, Douglas Hogg, who charged £2000 to the taxpayer for cleaning his moat is also reported to be stepping down at the next election.
I look forward to the day when Elliot Morley and Hazel Blears are found guilty and sentenced for their deliberate fraud of the taxpayer.
For those that don’t step down of their own accord there is only one alternative. They must be booted out of office.

I think he should be offered somewhere to live rent-free as a guest of her majesty for the next 10 years or so. In fact, I’d insist.
